World number two Coco Gauff has crashed out of Wimbledon in a stunning first-round defeat to Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska on Court One.

The American, considered one of the tournament favourites, fell 7-6 6-1 to the world number 42 in what marks the biggest upset of the championships so far.

Gauff's exit makes her the highest-ranked player to lose in the opening round, as Yastremska delivered a controlled performance to secure the shock victory.

The Ukrainian brought Court One to its feet with her remarkable triumph, completing the upset in just one hour and 18 minutes.

The American's performance was marred by nine double faults and 29 unforced errors, whilst managing just six winners throughout the match.

Her serving struggles proved particularly costly against Yastremska, who found control to complement her power at crucial moments.

The pair were originally scheduled to play on Centre Court but were moved to Court One after Novak Djokovic's match against Alexandre Muller was delayed until 7pm.

The delay occurred because Alexander Zverev's five-set battle with Arthur Rinderknech ran long.

Yastremska has shown Grand Slam pedigree before, having reached the Australian Open semi-finals last year and the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019.

The Ukrainian secured her first break whilst leading 3-2 in the opening set, converting with a backhand winner down the line.

She saved her serve in the following game with the same shot as Gauff threatened an immediate response.

Yastremska's first set point arrived at 5-4, but a double fault brought deuce.

Gauff capitalised to break back, yet the Ukrainian displayed greater courage in the tiebreak, dropping only three points to claim the set.

The pressure continued into the second set as Yastremska earned break points in the opening game.

After wasting the first with a wide forehand volley, Gauff handed her the second with a backhand slice into the net.

Gauff's errors continued to mount in the second set, with another unforced error into the net allowing Yastremska to consolidate for a 2-0 lead.

The Ukrainian maintained her aggressive approach and secured a double break advantage as the match slipped away from the American.

As Gauff departed Court One, she waved to the crowd after a performance that fell well short of expectations.

Yastremska spoke to Rishi Persad on court afterwards, all smiles following her remarkable victory over one of the pre-tournament favourites.

The result represents a significant achievement for Yastremska on Wimbledon's second biggest arena.
