NextImg:Christopher Hope admits that he has 'never seen' scenes like it after extraordinary PMQs with Rachel Reeves crying

GB News political editor Christopher Hope has revealed he has "never seen anything like it" at Prime Ministers Question's (PMQs) today after an extraordinary emotional display from Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

A tear could be seen rolling down Reeves's cheek as she watched the Prime Minister face questions from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

Speaking to GB News, Hope said: "Back in January, I actually asked the Prime Minister if he would guarantee the Chancellor has a job until the next election.

"He eventually said yes, after a day’s delay in giving that guarantee. But no one knows why she's so upset today.

"There's all sorts of speculation, whether she was passed a note, whether something happened but nothing is confirmed. We simply don’t know yet."

He added: "It’s a very public place to show that kind of emotion. Perhaps she felt she needed to attend PMQs to show support despite whatever was going on.

"But I’m afraid to say, from what people next to me observed, you could clearly see tears on her face. No one knows why. We’ll try to find out and bring you an update as soon as we can.

"I certainly hope it’s not bad or sad news, and frankly, on a human level, I hope she’s okay."

He added: "I’ve never seen anything like it, a prominent minister so visibly upset next to the Prime Minister during PMQs."

Asked about Rachel Reeves’ tears, a spokesperson for the Chancellor said: “It’s a personal matter, which, as you would expect, we are not going to get into.

“The Chancellor will be working out of Downing Street this afternoon.”

The emotional display came amid intense political pressure following the government's dramatic reversal on welfare reforms.

The Prime Minister was forced to abandon key elements of his benefits package on Tuesday, creating an almost £5billion shortfall in Reeves's spending plans.

The U-turn has sparked speculation about potential tax rises to fill the budget gap. Hope noted that despite repeated questioning, "still, no answer from the PM on whether taxes will rise in the autumn budget."

The Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch launched a direct attack on Reeves during the session.

"She looks absolutely miserable," Badenoch told MPs, before challenging Starmer to confirm whether she would remain in post until the next election.

Despite not clarifying at the time, the Prime Minister’s press secretary has since said: “The Chancellor is going nowhere. She has the Prime Minister’s full backing."

“He has said it plenty of times, he doesn’t need to repeat it every time the Leader of the Opposition speculates about Labour politicians. The Chancellor and the Prime Minister are focused entirely on delivering for working people.

“It’s thanks to the Chancellor’s management of the economy that we managed to restore stability, which has led to four interest rate cuts, wages rising faster than inflation and she recently delivered a spending review that invested in Britain’s national renewal.”
