A huge fire has engulfed Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses in Longridge, Lancashire, with dozens of firefighters battling to extinguish the blaze.

The blaze broke out shortly before 10pm last night, with the emergency services battling to contain the flames throughout the night.

The fire was brought under control earlier this morning but the emergency services remain in attendance.

However, two local schools close to the scene - Longridge High School and St Cecila's RC High School - have both been closed for the day due to the amount of smoke in the air.

As well as the near 50 firefighters in attendance, fire crews used specialist equipment including aerial ladder platforms, three main jets, and a water bowser to extinguish the blaze

Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service said last night: "We have 10 fire engines at a commercial property on Shay Lane, Longridge.

"Firefighters were called just before 10pm this evening and local residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors shut if they can smell or see smoke.

"We remain at this incident and crews will likely be in attendance through the night."

Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses confirmed it was their building which had been impacted by the fire in a post on social media.

It said: "We can confirm that Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene of a fire at our office and packing site on Shay Lane in Longridge."
