NextImg:Britons warned to brace for 'murder wasp' invasion as experts advise: 'Keep your windows shut!'

Swarms of "murder wasps" are expected to run rampant in the UK in the next few weeks, with Britons warned to shut their windows and stay inside.

The aggressive wasps are set to arrive in their thousands on Tuesday and could spread everywhere by the end of the month.

Pest control companies have already seen a large increase in call-outs due to the wasps.

UK pest control data showed that in June, jobs relating to wasps had increased by more than six times compared to the previous year.

And, the matter is expected to worsen by August as warm and wet weather earlier this year set up perfect conditions for the wasp population to grow.

Insect behaviour specialist Dr Nathaniel Green said: "We're seeing nests far larger than normal".

"Which means more wasps and more aggression," he added.

"Keep your windows shut; otherwise, you’re giving them an open invitation into your home."

Green said that once wasps sting you, the trouble remains.

"Wasps don’t just sting once and fly away," he said.

"If they feel threatened, they can sting repeatedly, and that venom can be deadly for someone with an allergy. In a swarm, the danger multiplies."

People may have already noticed how the wasps seem to be particularly aggressive this year.

Known as "murder wasps" - they are around mostly in the mid-afternoon.

It means people will see a reprieve as the night goes on.

However, beforehand, people can safeguard themselves by cleaning their windows, among other ways.

A key way is for people to also shut their windows to stop the pests from entering their rooms or homes.

"Smears, pollen, dust, these are like signposts for insects," Green said.

"To a wasp, a grimy window can signal a safe, undisturbed place to build a nest."

Green added that "filthy" windows are only welcoming the wasps to "set up camp here".

Bee Aware Allergy experts said a simple cucumber could also deter the wasps.

"Believe it or not, cucumbers can help ward off unwanted stinging pests," the experts said.

"All you need to do is slice a fresh cucumber and place it on aluminium foil."

It creates a chemical reaction that humans can't smell.

However, the wasps hate it.
