One of Vladimir Putin's cloest allies has warned Britons that they should "crap themselves with fear" over a recent wave of drone attacks across Europe.

Dmitry Medvedev, both a former President and Prime Minister of Russia - and now the deputy head of Russia's National Security Council, refused to rule out that Moscow was behind the drone incursions at a host of European airports.

He went on to prod that Russia applauded the unidentified objects for bringing "the danger of war" to Europe.

Airports and military infrastructure have been targeted by mysterious drones in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Norway, Lithuania and Sweden.

Last month, two Russian drones were shot down by Nato fighter jets in Poland.

On Sunday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he believed Russia was behind the majority of the drones.

But Mr Medvedev appeared to spread the blame to five potential sources of the "epidemic" of sightings.

He said the drones may have been launched by Moscow, Ukrainian forces, undercover Kremlin agents in Europe, European security services as a test of anti-drone defences, or even local troublemakers.

He wrote: "The causes of this panic around 'Russian drones' could be any of the listed reasons or a combination of them.

"[But] that's not the main thing. The main thing is that the short-sighted Europeans should feel on their own skin what the danger of war is.

"So that they fear and tremble like stupid animals in a herd being driven to the slaughter.

"So that they crap themselves with fear."

In an attempt to play down the roles played by pro-Russian "agents and moles", Mr Medvedev said they were awaiting a "separate command" before they leap into action, although he did not provide any further details on this.

Western governments have warned that Moscow could be planning an attack on a Nato member state within a few years.

Despite denying this, Vladimir Putin has also said he considers his country already "at war" with the West due to its support of Ukraine.

At the end of last month, the former head of MI5, Baroness Manningham-Buller said that Russian espionage, covert operations and cyber-attacks meant the UK "is already at war with Russia".

In doing so, she agreed with Dr Fiona Hill, a foreign policy expert and former adviser to Donald Trump.

Baroness Manningham-Buller said: "It's s different sort of war, but the hostility, the cyber attacks, the physical attacks, the intelligence work is extensive."
