A British tourist has told of how his Spanish holiday was left in shambles after witnessing a deadly brawl break out after a group of migrants stormed the beaches of the resort.

The migrants, who arrived on a small boat just moments before, began running through the courtyard of the Playavera Hotel in Almeria on the morning of August 11.

As the men attempted to reach the other side of the building, a fight broke out amongst them which resulted in a man being killed.

The 32-year-old tourist from Twickenham told the Mail he saw a group of 10-15 migrants land on the beach of the popular holiday destination as he was drinking coffee on his balcony.

The man revealed how he witnessed the migrants receive a mobile phone along with some money from a "handler" before they made a dash for the hotel.

However, after rushing downstairs to the lobby, the Twickenham resident claimed he saw the dead body of a migrant with a bloodied towel on top of him.

A Spanish police officer allegedly told the Briton that the man had been "beaten to death" by other migrants in the group who wanting to take his freshly collected phone and cash.

The 32-year-old said he was left in shock after the man's lifeless body was left in the Spanish heat for more than seven hours before being collected in the afternoon.

"We still had two days left of the holiday, and for those two days I barely left the room," he said.

"I just thought one of them has literally killed one of their own, what could they do to a couple of Britons who were there on holiday?

"His body was literally on the pavement in the hotel, as you leave through one of the hotel gates.

"The national police were there, smoking a cigarette and waiting for the coroner to come."

Although the Twickenham resident did not see the brawl first-hand, he claimed he heard a man screaming for help while bashing on his ground-floor window.

The Briton said he has seen "a few instances" of strangers coming off the street and into the hotel in his previous visits.

He said: "They had one security guard walking around, checking if people were wearing wristbands.

"There's a gate at the back where the property meets the beach, and that's usually left open, so people can literally just walk in and out as they please."

The Canary Islands, in the Atlantic, have been one of the most common first stops for migrants attempting to break into Europe.

Last year, over 46,000 migrants reached the islands, primarily from the African countries of Senegal, Mali and Morocco.

More than 2,200 people either vanished or died attempting to cross the Mediterranean by small boat in 2024.
