A British woman has died after falling from a white-water raft in the French Alps.

The incident occurred on the Guisane river near Briancon in southeast France.

The woman tumbled from the dinghy at around midday after embarking on an organised rafting excursion.

On Sunday, regional prosecutor Marion Lozac'hmeur confirmed the victim "unfortunately died yesterday evening".

An involuntary manslaughter probe has also been launched, Lozac'hmeur added, and said a post-mortem examination will be carried out as part of the inquiry.

Investigators will likely scrutinise safety protocols and equipment used during the excursion.

The Foreign Office has acknowledged the death of a British national in France, and confirmed it has been in touch with local authorities.

The department will typically offer consular support to the family following an incident like this.

But the woman's identity has neither been disclosed by French nor British authorities.

The accident took place at a river section locally referred to as "the wallet", according to local outlet Le Dauphine.

Emergency responders discovered the woman on the riverbank following her fall from the raft.

Firefighters told local media that she was in a critical state when found - while rescue teams later airlifted her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

She died in hospital on Saturday evening, several hours after the fall.

Her death follows a series of fatal accidents in the French Alps in 2025.

In February, a 23-year-old British tourist was found dead at the foot of a cliff in resort town Avoriaz.

The man had been skiing with friends before spending time at popular apres-ski venue La Folie Douce.

He later decided to ski down the mountainside alone - with police saying they believed he may have taken a wrong turn and removed his skis before falling to his death.

That came just weeks after a 55-year-old British man died after being caught in a massive avalanche while skiing off-piste in the French Alps.

His body was discovered by ski patrol members as they were preparing to close the slopes for the day, with medics later being flown to the scene by helicopter.
