A British man accused of being in the US illegally escaped from immigration custody with the help of Left-wing activists last week.

Ahmed Mohamed was being transferred to an immigrant detention centre in California on Tuesday when he broke out of Immigration and Customs (ICE) custody.

A masked man, understood to be a pro-immigration protestor, helped Mohamed to escape whilst he was being walked to an ICE facility in downtown Los Angeles in shackles, and guards were distracted, Homeland Security told The New York Post.

The suspect, who has been charged with narcotics and weapons offences, was then loaded into a waiting vehicle and other protestors helped him to make his getaway, according to ICE.

Mohamed was tracked down over a three-day manhunt, and "swiftly arrested" on Friday by ICE agents in San Diego.

The agents shared a social media post of the suspect which read: "You can run from the law but you cannot hide.

"After escaping ICE custody with the help of pro-illegal alien activists, Ahmed Mohamed of the UK was swiftly apprehended and placed back into ICE custody.

"On top of his charges and convictions for narcotics and weapons possession, he will now be charged with escaping from confinement."

ICE ended the post by congratulating Homeland Security San Diego for their "great work... in reuniting Ahmed with his handcuffs".

The detention centre was the target of anti-ICE protests in June.

Donald Trump deployed 2,000 troops alongside hundreds of US marines following demonstrations which erupted throughout Los Angeles against ICE raids.

At the time, the US President praised the National Guard but criticised Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom for being "unable to handle the tasks" of calming the city.

Immigration officers could be seen facing off with protesters who hurled rocks and cement at Border Patrol vehicles.

In response, federal agents deployed tear gas, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls.

During the most active weekend of protests in June, more than 160 people were arrested in by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Although Los Angeles acted as the epicentre of the demonstrations, they quickly spread across the US.

Activists also gathered in major cities, such as New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta, to protest against Trump's tough stance of migrants and illegal immigration.

Mohamed is not the only British citizen to have been detained by ICE this year.

In May Orlando Duncan Da Silva Bain, 19, was arrested in New York.

Da Salva Bain is said to have failed to declare his UK criminal record, which included child sex offences, upon entering the US.
