Authorities have praised members of the public after they bravely stepped in to end an attack by an XL bully and an aggressive French Bulldog.

The two dogs left six people injured, with bite marks, scratches and puncture wounds.

Despite only receiving minor injuries, some victims required stitches at the hospital.

Warwickshire Police responded to a report that two dogs were loose and attacking members of the public and another canine on Thursday afternoon in Polesworth.

The rampaging hounds were secured in a nearby garden and van by members of the public.

A man, 49, from Tamworth has now been arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control, causing injury.

He has since been released on bail until the end of November.

Police have launched an investigation following the incident.

The dogs, believed to be an XL bully and an aggressive French Bulldog, are currently being held in police kennels and are unharmed.

The condition of the third dog, which was injured in the attack, is unknown.

The incident has caused a lot of concern in the area and has led to a lot of speculation in the community, according to police.

The force also encourages members of the public to speak to officers who have remained in the area, if concerned.

North Warwickshire Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector, Andi Gibbons, said the individuals who stepped in "should be incredibly proud of what they did".

She said: "Thank you to those who called 999, and to those brave members of the public who stepped in to help."

"We understand this caused a lot of concern in the area and has led to a lot a speculation in the community. We’d like to reassure everyone that we’ve begun a full investigation to get to the bottom of what happened

"The six members of the public suffered largely superficial injuries – including bite marks, scratches and puncture wounds – with some getting stitches at hospital. We can also confirm two dogs are being kept safely in police kennels.

Ms Gibbons added: "We’ve had officers in the area since the incident and they will continue to be around, so if you’re worried, please speak to them.

"We’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area between midday and 12.30pm yesterday or from anyone who has information that can help. Please either share it with them, report it online through our website or call 101."

The XL Bully breed has been banned in the UK since January 31, 2024.

The restrictions make it a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales without an exemption certificate, which requires registration.
