An eight-year-old boy has died after a fire broke out at a house in Birkenhead.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to a serious house fire at 1.48am at Keele Close on the Beechwood Estate, with Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) also attending.

When they arrived at the scene, three people were on the ground, having jumped out of the windows at the two-story property.

An eight-year-old boy was rescued from inside the property by firefighters.

Despite extensive first aid efforts from emergency service crews, the boy was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

The three people who jumped out of the building are in hospital being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation, co-led by MFRS and Merseyside Police, has determined that the fire was accidental.

Chief Fire Officer Phil Garrigan said: “This has been a very tragic incident, with an incredibly sad outcome despite the best efforts of my crews. Our thoughts are very much with the family, friends and loved ones of the young boy at this time.

"We also know the impact that an incident like this will have on the local community and share our heartfelt condolences.

"I would like to commend the efforts of my fire control team and fire crews who acted so quickly to rescue the young boy and North West Ambulance Service colleagues who made every effort to provide emergency resuscitation."

Following the incident, firefighters and MFRS prevention staff will visit the area and give fire safety advice.

They will also complete free home fire safety checks as part of a reassurance campaign.
