A rough sleeper in Birmingham was set on fire in a "shocking attack" last night, police have confirmed.

West Midlands Police said that the victim, who is in his 30s, suffered injuries to his face and hands which risk being life-changing.

"In the shocking attack, a man who we believe was sleeping in the underpass, had bedding set alight and then piled on top of him," police said in a statement.

"It happened at just after 9.20am on Tuesday near where Hockley Hill crosses over Boulton Middleway.

"The man in his 30s suffered potentially life-changing injuries to his face and hands and remains in a stable condition in hospital."

A CCTV image has been released on a man who the police want to speak to in connection to the attack.

The low-quality image show a man riding an electric scooter in the area where the attack took place.

The police added: "We know this image isn't very clear, and we are working to find further CCTV opportunities, but we hope that this image may prompt someone to come forward with information.

"The man is described as white, 5ft 5in, and wearing a white vest, white hoodie, black gloves, grey jogging bottoms, black shoes and wearing chains."
