An Amazon delivery driver went the wrong way around a roundabout and crashed head-on with another car as he was "desperate" for the toilet.

Mohammed Alamin admitted he made a "stupid decision" while travelling along Rover Way in Cardiff at 11pm on September 21 last year.

As he the wrong exit at the roundabout on Lamby Way, he collided with Emma Jones who was travelling in the opposite direction with her daughter and daughter's boyfriend.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Jones saw the defendant's car speeding towards her which caused her airbags to deploy and smoke to fill the car.

Alamin's car continued to travel before a wheel came off.

When interviewed at the scene, the Amazon driver said he tried to "take a shortcut" and when he saw Jones' car coming towards him, he unsuccessfully tried to squeeze through a gap.

He told police he had "a long day" in work and was travelling back from Newport.

The defendant added he was "desperate for the toilet" after undergoing a kidney transplant.

Jones suffered bruising to her forearms and whiplash while her daughter suffered sprains to her neck and back and a neck burn from the seatbelt.

Her daughter's boyfriend suffered a soft tissue injury to the back of his neck.

Alamin, who was unrepresented and gave mitigation on his own behalf, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and told Judge Simon Mills he was sorry for the injuries he had caused to Jones and her family.

He explained that he was a university student at the time but had to postpone his studies to pay off his debts from the collision.

Judge Mills said the defendant's prospect of rehabilitation and his previous good character meant it was "just and correct" to pass a suspended sentence.

He was sentenced to eight months imprisonment suspended for 12 months.

He was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, an eight-day rehabilitation activity requirement and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
