Over the past few years, as the woke fever of the BLM years died down, major corporations began cutting their DEI departments.
Now NBC is cutting its DEI first.
NBC News eliminated its teams dedicated to covering issues affecting Black, Asian American, Latino and LGBTQ+ groups as part of its layoffs of about 150 staffers on Wednesday, according to two sources familiar with the matter, a significant culling as the Peacock network separates from its sister news network, MSNBC.
The cuts mean that the verticals NBC BLK, NBC Asian America, NBC Latino and NBC OUT will no longer have dedicated teams bolstering their coverage. The verticals will continue to publish stories related to the specific groups and NBC News may ultimately retain up to five staffers who will contribute coverage on the verticals to the newsroom, according to one source, as the dedicated teams focused exclusively on these verticals are sunset.
NBC’s identity politics stuff was some of the worst material in network news sites, but that’s subjective, what is objectively true is that the company’s news division decided that the DEI stuff was the most disposable.
Why? Here’s some options.
- It’s not profitable and fails at the basis task of bringing in minority viewers or readers.
- It’s low quality trash whose productivity ratios are poor compared to the cost.
- It was a luxury virtue signaling product. And that’s the first thing to get cut, along with champagne in the break room and the golden toilets, when the numbers have to stack.
Or, you know, all of the above.
Around 2020 or so, corporations committed to doing everything through ‘the lens of equity’. It turns out that the lens of equity is broken and always was. They didn’t really believe the rhetoric they inflicted on us and now the same folks who spent millions on DEI are dumping it because it’s no longer in fashion and surplus to requirements.
