Joe Biden just gave his umpteenth speech about democracy. Biden’s definition of democracy, like the European definition of it, is rooted in the century old idea of a struggle between democracy and non-democratic regimes that defined WWI and WWII. The problem with this formula is that it defines democracy as being against, for example, fascism, rather than by actually functioning as a free society with fair and open elections.
In the latter half of the 20th century, leftist parties increasingly weaponized the concept of ‘democracy’ to suppress domestic political opponents. In Europe, Canada, Australia Israel and now America, democracy came to be equivalent to leftist politics and meant adopting leftist views and suppressing conservative ones.
In a New Yorker interview with Peter Daou, a former Clinton aide running Cornel West’s third party presidential campaign, he asks what is the point of democracy if all it is defined by is its opposition to the other side in order to maintain a one or two-party system.
Let’s say this cycle we also say the same thing, which is, Oh, my God, we have to stop Donald Trump or we have to stop whoever the Republican might be. And this happens the next cycle and the next cycle and the next cycle. Where is the so-called democracy that we’re supposedly protecting or saving? What we’re doing is we’re crushing third parties. We are stifling democracy itself, Isaac. This is the problem.
Democrats have been waging a campaign against democracy by attacking any third party bid, from No Labels to West, warning that anyone running against Biden is a threat to democracy. Biden (or the default Dem candidate) has come to embody democracy and anyone opposing him is undermining democracy.
What do you call democracy when you strip away elections? Who was notorious for these constant assertions of democracy while maintaining totalitarian systems? Communists.
All this “protecting democracy” from elections stuff is ultimately just Communism.
