Leftism means never having to say you’re not a perpetual victim. Even the most privileged leftists “of color” in society, like entertainer Whoopi Goldberg, often wear their claims of racial victimization like a badge of righteousness, while demonizing an America that has blessed them with wealth, fame, and power as inherently racist.
Caryn Elaine Johnson, better known the world over as Whoopi Goldberg, has a reported net worth of at least $30 million. As the vile ringleader of the inexplicably long-running ABC propaganda-fest The View, she pulls in $8 million annually.
On The View last week, Goldberg complained that an unnamed bakery declined to deliver a special order of desserts for her birthday, but that she received them anyway after sending someone else to pick them up:
My birthday dessert today was one of my mom’s favorites from when she was a kid, she talked about these all the time, they’re called Charlotte Russe. It’s a sponge cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top. I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings. The place that made these refused to make them for me.
“They said that their ovens had gone down, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them,” she said added, before going on to insinuate – with absolutely zero evidence – that the bakery discriminated against her.
“It’s not… because I’m a woman, but perhaps they did not like my politics,” Whoopi claimed. “But, that’s okay, because you know what, listen, this is my mother’s celebration. Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you everyone for celebrating my birthday today.”
Viewers quickly figured out that the desserts came from Holtermann’s, Staten Island’s oldest family-owned bakery (established in 1878). In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, owner Jill Holtermann confirmed that Goldberg had placed an order a couple of weeks before, but she explained that the bakery was unable to fulfill the order because of mechanical issues.
“We were having trouble with our boilers,” Holtermann said, explaining that she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through.”
She was able to make 50 of the requested desserts, which were featured on the View, and noted that none of her employees was aware of the political views of those who picked up the order.
“We didn’t know what was going on until somebody called us from Ohio” Holtermann added, “and he said, ‘You know, there’s this thing with Whoopi Goldberg and the Charlotte Russe cups,’ and I didn’t know what he was talking about.”
To the credit of New Yorkers, in the wake of this controversy the bakery has received a tsunami of support and orders, including from local political leaders.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the incredible support we’ve received from near and far,” Holtermann wrote in an Instagram post. “For the second day in a row, we’ve emptied out the shop, and it’s all thanks to YOU! Your love and loyalty keep us going!”
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella (R) held a press conference with the owner outside the bakery on Friday, stating, “Recently someone took to the national airwaves and defamed, frankly, this family business. We’re here to stand up for one of the best families and businesses, not just in Staten Island but in the country.”
Fossella added, “Frankly, the people who defamed the Holtermann family should apologize … for making stuff up to suit their needs. Not everybody wakes up every day and thinks about politics.”
That should have ended it, and Whoopi should have been gracious enough to own her culpability and apologize to the bakery. But she wouldn’t let it go. Of course she wouldn’t, because leftists never apologize or admit to their defaming lies (see Smollett, Jussie, to name just one egregious example). In an Instagram video posted Friday, the wealthy celebrity doubled down on the ugly suggestion of discrimination. It seemed “a little odd,” Whoopi said, that Holtermann’s originally said they could not fill the order but then “somehow” managed to when “somebody else called without using my name.”
Attorney and legal scholar Jonathan Turley wrote for Fox News on Sunday that a defamation suit against Goldberg would be a “piece of cake.” He pointed out that it would be incorrect to think she cannot be sued since Whoopi did not publicly specify the business’ name, because “the identity of the bakery was quickly deduced and published widely.”
This kind of behavior is par for the course for privileged progressives “of color.” Remember when billionaire celebrity Oprah Winfrey – literally one of the most privileged people on the planet – claimed to be the victim of a racist shop assistant in Switzerland, saying the woman refused to show her a handbag because it was “too expensive”? Like Whoopi, Winfrey did not name the high-end boutique in question, but it was swiftly identified as Trois Pomme, the manager of which turned out to be Tina Turner’s “best friend.” She explained that the incident Oprah chose to blow up into a racial insult was a “200 percent misunderstanding” and “had nothing to do with racism.”
“Mrs. Oprah said she just wanted to look at the bag, she didn’t want it taken down, and because my sales assistant felt a little embarrassed about the price, she quickly said that she also had the model in other materials such as ostrich and suede, which weren’t so expensive,” explained Trudie Goetz, the manager of Trois Pommes.
Calling it a “normal selling discussion,” Ms. Goetz added, “Who wouldn’t want to sell a bag like that? Everyone would. My saleswoman just wanted to do her best. She feels very bad because she feels the way it’s being represented is very unfair.”
It was unfair, but that’s how progressive celebrity bullies roll. No matter how bloated their bank accounts or egos, they’re ever-ready to hurl ugly, dangerous smears of racism whenever it fancies them to wield that power against whites of lesser social status.
This must no longer stand. As Americans demonstrated in the recent presidential election, the age of celebrity-worship is over. Though she likely has no interest in pursuing legal action against Whoopi Goldberg, bakery owner Jill Holtermann should sue the unrepentant witch if only to shame her for this racist lie. The rich and famous progressives “of color” who defame this country as “racist in its DNA,” as Barack Obama once put it (the twice-elected President with a net worth of $70 million), while owing their privilege to it, must be shamed and shunned for their anti-Americanism and their own racist slanders.
