NextImg:Senate GOP: Make an Immigration Deal With Dems Now Before We Get a Majority!

Someone stop us before we win. The headline isn’t just sarcastic, it’s their actual argument.

Speaker Mike Johnson is publicly and privately panning the Senate’s ongoing border and immigration negotiations. Senate Republicans are reminding him that it’s the best deal he’ll ever get.

Republican senators said on Tuesday that they see only worse opportunities ahead to craft a border bill that can pass, given that Democrats who run the Senate and White House are now considering major changes to asylum policy, new expulsion authorities and perhaps even putting limits on presidential parole authority. If Republicans try to wait for a better deal after November’s election, senators say, they could end up with GOP control over Congress and the White House — but Democrats who are in no mood to deal on the issue.

If I were taking in these people with me to help me buy a used car, they’d urge me to take the first offer and throw in more money because if I wait till next year, the salesman will be less likely to want to negotiate because he’ll be resentful that I didn’t buy it then.

Of all the insane sales pitches on the table, “let’s make a deal now before we gain actual negotiating leverage” is up there.

But that’s because Senate GOPers don’t actually want to crack down on illegal migration. Middle-of-the-road establishment types in both parties are easy sales on some form of amnesty while packaging it with some kind of border security. Most people in both parties think the situation is out of control and they want to reduce the scale of the problem, but not actually put a stop to it.

Immigration deals with Dems are always a Catch 22 in which there’s more open borders and immigration, not less.

Here the Dems are proposing to trade “new expulsion authorities” (absolutely worthless since Biden wants open borders) and (perhaps even putting limits on presidential parole authority) which Biden has already announced is a non-starter. The latter might be worth something depending on the enforcement mechanisms and whether it could even pass, but trading it for significantly increased immigration and work permits for all the illegal invaders Biden already allowed inside is a bad deal.

The work permits ensure that they’ll all stay here.

Fast forward to a potential Republican president who actually ends this madness (probably a fantasy) and there’s much less need for congressional involvement. An administration which is actually serious about this can find ways to secure the border and end the asylum flood without a congressional deal.

The only thing that the Dems may be offering of value here is a limit on the authority of a Dem president to release illegal aliens, but I suspect little will stop that from happening anyway.

So the deal is mostly worthless for ending the invasion, but will likely involve giving Biden more resources to more swiftly process the invaders, and expand ‘legal immigration’ further while giving work permits to the illegals so they never decide to leave.

Hell of a deal.
