Climate disinformation is a serious problem.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the Canadian wildfires “truly unprecedented” in floor remarks Wednesday and warned of the ongoing damage caused by climate change.

“This morning, our nation’s capital — and much of the Northeast, including almost the whole of my state, New York — woke up once again under a veil of smog,” Schumer said. “As we speak, wildfires of unnatural strength continue blazing in Canada, sending toxic air and smoke over the border and over American cities.”

The Quebec wildfires were caused by lightning. But the vast majority of fires are caused by human beings, whether through arson or accident.

That’s as far as any kind of “human-caused” climate disaster goes.

So Senator Schumer was practically right. Fires like these could have been caused by human actions, not through ‘climate change, but careless campers or arsonists, but in this case he’s still wrong, they were caused by lightning.
