The “we love this country so much we want to destroy it” crowd is back at it.

An effort to encourage U.S. consumers to participate in a day of protest by not spending money Friday has picked up momentum online, with thousands of people across social media saying they plan to take part in the “economic blackout.”

Started roughly a month ago by John Schwarz, a Chicago-area meditation and mindfulness educator, the idea has taken off on social media, where searches for the term surface hundreds of posts of people sharing screenshots of infographics and encouraging others to participate in the protest. Google’s search data shows queries for “economic blackout” have surged in recent days.

“Don’t buy stuff on February 28,” author Stephen King posted on Bluesky. “Money’s the only thing these d—- understand.”

Actors John Leguizamo and Bette Midler have shared similar sentiments in recent days to their social media accounts.

While I’m sure King has a team of money managers investing his cash, have he and other celebs actually considered the impact that economic problems would have on a field that depends on disposable income?

Unlike, say food, shelter and medicine, people don’t actually need to buy whatever drivel King puts out these days. Or watch whatever John Leguizamo is doing. (Subway commercials, guest appearances on random TikTok accounts.)

And, speaking of useless things that people don’t actually need, NBC News, which decided to promote this, is the loss leader for an entertainment company that Comcast is spinning off into, I believe, SpinCo. That’s because the cable and network model is collapsing and Comcast, which happens to be in the cable business, no longer sees a bright future for it.

Let’s say this ‘economic blackout’ happens, how many more people will decide to dump cable to cut costs?

The last time this crowd ginned up a disaster in 2020, the film industry collapsed and the media cut more jobs than DOGE. Are they really this committed to taking down Trump that they want a repeat?
