Hillary Clinton, fresh from doing absolutely nothing for the last 8 years, popped back out with an op-ed, and claims, “I am the only person to have debated both men (Mr. Trump in 2016 and, in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary race, Mr. Biden).”
Debating Biden in 2008 has limited relevance at best to his current state of affairs. Biden was still an unhinged idiot, but he was an unhinged idiot with energy and a reasonable amount of focus. He also came off as a sleazy car salesman in an informercial, but these days he comes off as a fragile doddering idiot.
This is the man Hillary debated in 2008.
This is the man today. And Hillary knows it which is why she tried to lower expectations.
Unfortunately, Mr. Biden starts from a disadvantage because there’s no way he can spend as much time preparing as I did eight years ago. Being president isn’t just a day job; it’s an everything-everywhere-all-at-once job. Historically, that has led to weaker first debate performances for the incumbent. As viewers, we should try not to get hung up on the theatrics.
The theatrics being the actual debate.
But sure, Biden has a busy schedule of calling early lids and heading every weekend to Delaware so he just can’t find the time for debate prep. But his debate prep includes a mockup of the debate stage and other extensive preparations.
Pick one or the other. Not both.
Hillary Clinton expects Biden to lose and insists that the actual debate shouldn’t be the issue. What then should it be? Policy? Results?
