“I’m the first female candidate in San Mateo County history to run for sheriff. And if I’m elected, I would be the first Latina sheriff of the whole state of California,” Sheriff Christina Corpus told voters in one of the many flattering media stories promoting her candidacy.
Now, the Bay Area progressive sheriff finds herself in court on corruption charges. Her $10 million lawsuit however claims she’s being discriminated against as a ‘Latin X’ person.
The political platform by the self-proclaimed daughter of Latin American immigrants included sending social workers to deal with violent criminals and refusing to cooperate with ICE. But when she tried to have one of her biggest opponents arrested, she didn’t send social workers.
Instead she allegedly tried to frame and arrest one of her department critics on fraud charges.
For many in San Mateo County, it was the last straw in a series of scandals which had upended the Sheriff’s Department. As a candidate, Sheriff Corpus had promised to replace tasers with teaching officers Ju-Jitsu moves after BLM protests due to the death of a man who died after being tasered during a struggle with police officers, but her actual moves once in office included creating a $246,000 position for her real estate broker chief of staff with whom she was cheating on her husband even while the broker was providing her with thousands of dollars worth of jewelry.
Corpus claimed that telling her “whom she could date” was not only “offensive but demeaning and discriminatory” and an example of the “sexual discrimination” of which she was a victim. At a press conference, she confusingly claimed that she has a “personal relationship with” the man in question” and with “members of my staff.”
The new sheriff promised to spend $100,000 fixing morale problems in the department with a ‘wellness program”. The actual wellness program included two $6,000 massage chairs, a $600,000 TV and a $74,000 conference room table with its own built in cooling fans that was described as “the most expensive table in the history of San Mateo County.”
Facing an internal rebellion over the chief of staff, whom she had inappropriately promoted into a position he was not qualified for and was even more inappropriately having an affair with, Corpus allegedly told her assistant sheriff to investigate and arrest the head of the deputy’s union. The case was thrown out with the DA’s office stating that “there was no basis to believe any violation of law had occurred, and finally that Deputy Tapia should not have been arrested.”
After running for office promising to “deescalate” arrests, Corpus, like many progressives, was instead trying to arrest her critics. But while the woke sheriff had pledged to go easy on criminals and illegals, she was waging a war on law enforcement officers in and out of her department. And she was using the force and abuses that she had decried when she first ran.
“Since I took office in January of 2023, the Sheriff’s Office has not turned anyone over to ICE,” Sheriff Christina Corpus bragged last month. Refusing to turn over illegal alien criminals to ICE had been one of her selling points to progressives during the election. While her predecessor, Sheriff Bolanos had turned over criminals to ICE, illegals would enjoy sanctuary in San Mateo.
Somewhat less progressively, Corpus was accused of using the ‘N-word” against her predecessor and a slur involving lesbians, however she denied the allegation, claiming that “Anyone who knows me knows I would not use racist words. I am not capable of that.”
“Racism is disgusting and vile. As a woman of color, this disturbs me deeply,” she argued.
After months of calls for Corpus to resign, the Board of Supervisors finally voted to try and remove her over a laundry list of scandals that included everything from alleged retaliation against employees, concealing the massage chairs to inappropriate access to suppressed rifles by her boyfriend. Corpus however blamed all of her problems on racism and sexism.
“I am a woman of color that has gone up the ranks in a male dominated field,” she protested.
Last month a grand jury decided that Corpus would stand trial on corruption charges, including for the arrest of the union leader, but getting rid of the progressive sheriff may not be easy.
As of now, she still remains in office and her department bio states that “Sheriff Corpus is a distinguished public servant willing to surpass the status quo to enact a more progressive and inclusive model for community policing” which apparently includes arresting critics.
The Board of Supervisors voted to put Measure A, a proposition to remove Corpus from office, on the ballot and it gained backing from 85% of voters, and this allows the board to remove her, subject to an appeal and a hearing, but Sheriff Corpus blamed the election results on… racism and sexism.
“To target one person, and one person only. The first Latina sheriff,” her lawyer fumed.
That 85% was the result of an election in which, unlike her previous election, the radical leftist SEIU union was not able to pump an illegal campaign contribution into her campaign.
Apart from the massage chairs and the “most expensive table in the history of San Mateo County”, she leaves behind quite a legacy of DEI. “Since January of 2023, we have hired over 170 sworn law enforcement officers! The experience and diversity is unprecedented!” she bragged. Corpus also boasted of creating the first “Pride Patch” in the department and advancing DEI. As elected officials moved to remove her, among the few voices rising in her defense, was a leftist organization touting her “commitment to diversity and equity.”
And Christina Corpus has filed a $10 million lawsuit claiming that the County is “discriminating against, harassing, and defaming a dedicated public servant because the defendants do not want either a woman or a Latin X person as the head of their Sheriff’s Department.”
So no matter what happens, Christina Corpus will be always be the “first Latina sheriff”. Eventually though she may be known as the most hated first Latina sheriff in California.
