If only we could do something about those guns by keeping the criminals whose hands shoot them locked behind bars?
Flashback to 2016.
Durbin Welcomes Alton Mills To Speak At Senate Forum On Criminal Justice Reform
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) met today with Alton Mills, an Illinoisan who was serving a mandatory life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense until his sentence was commuted by President Obama in December at Durbin’s urging. Mr. Mills and two of his federal public defenders, MiAngel Cody and Amanda Graham, are in Washington, D.C. at Senator Durbin’s invitation to address a meeting of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee.
“An overlooked casualty in our ‘war on drugs’ are the men and women who have been convicted under disproportionately harsh mandatory minimum sentencing laws. One such man is Alton Mills, who served more than two decades of a mandatory life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense, a punishment even the sentencing judge disagreed with,” Durbin said. “I commend Alton for the bravery he has shown in choosing to tell his story, and I am honored to welcome him to Washington this week.”
The actual casualty in the War on Drugs was the woman that Mills, with Durbin and Obama’s help, shot.
A convicted cocaine dealer, who was given a second chance when his life sentence was commuted by former President Obama in 2015 is back in prison on attempted murder charges after he shot a woman, leaving her brain-dead, cops say.
The car the group were traveling in came up behind Mills’ SUV at a red light near the I-57 on-ramp in Posen, Illinois, but Mills did not move even after the light had turned green.
The driver of the other vehicle instead proceeded to pass him without even honking or shouting but Mills appeared to take affront.
He suddenly sped up to catch the car the friends were in and lowered his window before firing three shots from the drivers side, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Kathryn Morrissey, during Mills’ bail hearing.
One of the bullets struck a woman who had fallen asleep in the back seat of the car leading to a severe head injury from which she is now unlikely to recover.
Senator Elizabeth Warren was also kvelling at a photo op with the cocaine dealer and future interstate shooter.
This morning I met Alton Mills, a man who had served 22 years of a mandatory life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense until President Obama recently commuted his sentence. Alton’s story reminds me: It’s not justice when someone who needs help can go away for life for selling crack on the street,
It’s not justice when lefties release criminals. Alton Mills belonged behind bars. If not for Senator Durbin, Senator Warren, and Barack Obama, he would still be there and a woman would still be alive.
Her blood is on their hands.
Criminal justice reform, no matter how it’s sold, no matter whether Democrats or Republicans do it, no matter who lobbies for it, means setting criminals loose and people die.
It’s that simple.
