Good news for anyone who was worried about the DEI status of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, which incorporated DEI policies to the front office in 2019, is also keeping the initiatives intact.
“It is just how we go about things,” said Kevin Clayton, the Cavs’ executive vice president, chief equity and impact officer. “We believe that everybody in our organization, every person in our community, is part of our diversity, equity and inclusion story. So it’s not about any one group. This work is about humanity. We know that our platform is one that can uplift our community — everyone in our community.”
According to the Cavs website, they commit that “Our team members at all levels mirror the demographics of the communities that we live and work in.”
Cleveland does have a large black population, 45.8% but it also has a 36% white population and a 13% Latino population.
The team roster appears to have 13 out of 17 black players which would be 76% and that does not mirror Cleveland.
The correct number of black players on the Cavs team in proportion to Cleveland demographics would be 7.6 players. Presumably one of the multiracial players like Ty Jerome could be the half.
The Cavs are going to need to get rid of 5 black players. They need 2 Latino players and currently appear to have none.
They have only 4 white players and need to step up to 6.
Only when the Cavs have a roster of 7.6 black players, 6 white players, 2 Latino players and one part Asian/Indian/Eskimo player will they properly reflect the diversity of Cleveland and their commitment to DEI.
I don’t make these insane rules. They do.
Or I guess we could have meritocracy instead of racial quotas and toss DEI in the same ash heap of history as segregated water fountains.
