Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor in former U.S. president Donald Trump's election subversion case in Georgia, withdrew from the case on Friday, CNN reported, citing his resignation letter.

A Georgia judge overseeing Trump's trial had earlier said that Fulton Country district attorney Fani Willis could remain on the case as long as she removed Wade, with whom she had a personal relationship.

"The furtherance of the rule of law and democracy is and always has been the North Star of our combined efforts in the prosecution of those who are alleged to have attempted to overthrow the results of Georgia's 2020 presidential election," Wade wrote in the letter addressed to Willis.

"I am proud of the work our team has accomplished in investigating, indicting, and litigating this case," he added. "Seeking justice for the people of Georgia and the United States, and being part of the effort to ensure that the rule of law and democracy are preserved, has been the honor of a lifetime."
