California Bill to Limit ‘Racially Biased’ Traffic Stops Passes Senate
California's Senate narrowly passed a bill that restricts law enforcement's ability to make traffic stops for low-level infractions without an additional reason. Senate Bill 50 was introduced by Sen. Steven Bradford, who said the data showed these pretextual stops were used disproportionately against communities of color. The bill is opposed by state law enforcement agencies and district attorneys, who argue it could undermine public safety and reduce accountability for low-level infractions. The legislation would allow an officer to have a citation mailed to the vehicle owner or a warning letter to correct defects or remedy the ticket in certain cases.
