Russia is suspected of orchestrating a TikTok propaganda campaign in Romania that aided pro-Kremlin candidate Calin Georgescu in winning the first round of the presidential election with 22.9% of the vote. Declassified intelligence indicates a "highly organised" strategy linked to "hybrid attacks" on Romania.
Georgescu, who opposes NATO and has vowed to halt aid to Ukraine if elected, dismissed the allegations against his campaign as fearmongering. The EU has responded by ordering TikTok to freeze data related to the Romanian election under the Digital Services Act.
