Breitbart: IRS Increases Penalty for Tax Underpayments to Eight Percent
The IRS is now charging eight percent interest for estimated tax underpayments, up from three percent two years ago. This increase is a result of rising interest rates. Gig workers and consultants who don't have taxes withheld may be affected, as well as those with additional income who miscalculate their payments. To avoid penalties, most filers must pay 90% of their taxes through withholding or estimated payments. The IRS won't charge a penalty if the balance due is less than $1,000 after accounting for withholding and credits.
The IRS imposes the Underpayment of Estimated Tax penalty on individuals, estates, and trusts who fail to pay enough estimated taxes on income or if the payment is overdue. The penalty may still apply even if a refund is owed. IRS officials have delayed reporting requirements for gig workers earning over $600 through apps like Zelle and Venmo. In January, a survey found that most Americans believe Congress should repeal funding for additional IRS agents. It's worth noting that the IRS has been hiring armed agents.

Florida's SB 256 is a step in the right direction for workers' rights.
