Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu has been sentenced to seven years in prison for espionage after being detained while meeting a Japanese diplomat in February 2022. His family claims the verdict labels foreign diplomats as espionage agents, raising concerns about the implications for Chinese citizens interacting with foreign embassies.
Dong, a former deputy head at Guangming Daily and contributor to the Chinese edition of the New York Times, advocated for political reform, which conflicted with Communist Party views. The U.S. Ambassador to China condemned the conviction as an infringement on freedom of speech.
