A cease-fire between Israel and Iran appeared to be on shaky ground on Tuesday, less than a day after the truce was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
As he departed Washington for the NATO summit in The Hague on Tuesday, Trump said both countries had violated the cease-fire. This was just hours after Trump had announced that the cease-fire had gone into effect. Trump was enraged that the truce was seemingly crumbling so quickly. “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. Do you understand that?” Trump told reporters.
In a subsequent post on Truth Social, Trump said, “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”
This came after the Israeli military on Tuesday said it had detected missiles fired at northern Israel by Iran. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel would respond “forcefully” with “powerful strikes against regime targets in the heart of Tehran.” Iran denied violating the cease-fire. Israel struck a radar site near Tehran on Tuesday, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu committed to refraining from tougher attacks after a phone call with Trump, according to the Israeli leader’s office.
Earlier on Tuesday, Netanyahu said Israel had accepted the cease-fire. “In light of the achievement of the operation’s goals, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel agreed to the President’s proposal for a mutual ceasefire,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement, while warning that Israel would respond to any violations. Prior to Netanyahu’s statement, Iranian state media also confirmed that Tehran had accepted the truce.
Trump announced the cease-fire on Monday, stating that it would bring an end to what he dubbed the 12-Day War.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.’ This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
The president’s announcement on the cease-fire came just hours after Iran launched a missile attack on a U.S. air base in Qatar. There were no casualties from the Iranian attack, which occurred days after the United States stunned the world with strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
On June 13, the Israeli military launched a surprise operation against Iran with the goal of destroying its nuclear program, which Netanyahu has characterized as an existential threat to Israel. Trump on Saturday said the U.S. operation was a major success and “totally obliterated” Iran’s key nuclear sites. Though it does appear that Iran’s nuclear program has suffered major setbacks, the assessment of the extent of the damage is ongoing.
