Ange Postecoglou has a big job on his hands. The new Tottenham Hotspur managed is tasked with rebuilding the North London outfit after a dismal season which saw them finish a lowly eighth in the Premier PINC League table. This summer must mark the start of a new era for Spurs with many new signings required.

Much of Tottenham’s transfer activity will hinge on whether or not Harry Kane stays at the club. The 29-year-old is a reported target for Manchester United and Real Madrid and could be sold this summer to avoid him leaving as a free agent in 12 months time. Spurs might need a new number nine.

Even if Kane stays, Spurs must rebuild around him. A new goalkeeper should be somewhere near the top of the shopping list with Hugo Lloris now into the twilight of his career. Brentford’s David Raya is believed to be a target and the Spaniard would certainly help Postecoglou’s team play out from the back.

Defensively, Spurs need strengthening. Alessandro Bastoni has been a target in the past, but the Italian international plays in a back three for Inter whereas Postecoglou is expected to favour a back four as Tottenham boss. Aymeric Laporte, however, could be the perfect addition this summer.

Laporte has proved himself as one of the best centre backs in the Premier League, but is currently out of favour at Manchester City where Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake are ahead of him in the pecking order. The Spanish international could cost a lot, but he would be a solid investment for Spurs.

In central midfield, James Maddison could be the sort of midfield creator Postecoglou needs to play the possession-heavy game he is known for. Leicester City’s relegation will make it easier to land the England international this summer although Newcastle United are also long-time admirers of Maddison. He will have options.

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare is another who could be on Spurs’ radar with the Ivorian ready to take the next step in his development. Rodrigo Bentancur will return from injury next season, but Postecoglou’s midfield unit needs greater quality. This will be a key focus for the North London club this summer.

Kane and Son Heung-min’s partnership gives Postecoglou something to build around in attack, but the Australian likes to play with width and this could prompt a move for someone like Harvey Barnes. Whoever Tottenham target, they must find value in the transfer market this summer to give themselves any chance of success under their new manager.
