The 14-second clip can be seen at the end of the Netflix’s 2024 series & films preview video, confirming Squid Game’s next season will release on an undisclosed date this year.
The clip features the show’s protagonist Seong Gi-hun vowing to find the shady organizer of the survival game in what appears to be a scene that occurs shortly after the ending of season one.
Netflix also shared some new photos of the second season portraying Gi-hun, returning villains and a new character receiving an invite to the lethal game.
The new season will feature several new cast members from other South Korean titles on Netflix including “Unlocked,” “The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure” and “The Glory.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator and director, had no plans for a second season while writing the first. It also took Dong-hyuk 12 years to convince a network to pick up the show.
2.2 billion. That’s how many hours of Squid Game have been watched by Netflix users, making the show the most-watched series of all-time on the platform.
The show inspired a real-life version of the tournament produced by Netflix called “Squid Game: The Challenge,” where contestants played in a knockout tournament for a $4.56 million prize. Players on the show threatened to sue its producers late last year over claims they experienced hypothermia and nerve damage during shooting.
Squid Game revolves around Gi-hun, a father dealing with financial hardship who is invited to participate in a winner-take-all 456-person tournament for the chance to win $38 million. Gi-hun accepts the invitation, competing his way through the survival game and meeting similarly troubled players along the way. Squid Game rapidly became Netflix’s most-watched show ever, backed by nine episodes filled with high stakes, sympathetic and shady characters and plenty of gore.
