What to watch this weekend.

The second-to-last weekend of May is here and it’s actually the first weekend in a while that’s kind of slow on new releases. But there’s always so much to catch up on, this may actually be a blessing in disguise!

Each week I’m bringing you this ongoing list of shows and movies that I’m watching or excited to watch—stuff that I think my readers will enjoy, ranging from creepy horror dramas to animated fantasy shows and detective mysteries. I write about everything from Yellowjackets to House of the Dragon to murder mysteries here on this blog, so my weekly streaming guide covers lots of ground.

I’m breaking this list up into two sections: The first is “New This Week” which covers new streaming content that’s either just come out or is about to come out this weekend. Sometimes this section will also include things I missed the week before—it’s impossible to keep up with everything!

The second section is “Ongoing Shows” which will include shows that are still airing but that I think people should tune into. Often, but not always, these will be shows I write recaps for. I may also include a “Bonus” section for older stuff that I’ve come across and, well, bonus stuff. You get the gist.

So, without further adieu, let’s dive right in!

See last week’s guide right here.

The Office’s Rainn Wilson takes us to various places around the world like Iceland—the happiest place on Earth—in a travel documentary about finding happiness, something that Wilson has trouble clinging to. Philosophy, psychology, travel and the infectious charm of Rainn Wilson all conspire to make what looks to be an incredibly heartwarming five-part documentary.

That’s it for new stuff! Like I said, slow weekend! (If you know of something I don’t, let me know on Twitter or Facebook.

I binged this entire series (or what’s out so far anyways) in two days and I have to say it’s absolutely phenomenal. Elizabeth Olsen is so damn good in this it’s not even funny. She’s downright scary as Candy Montgomery. This is the true story of a murder in a small town in Texas in 1978 and although it’s been done before, I’m glad HBO took a crack at it. Really great limited series with a couple episodes left!

Speaking of great, The Great came out on Hulu last week and continues the story of Catherine the Great and the feckless Emperor Peter III. A wonderful cast, delightfully dark humor and marvelous performances from Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult make this a must-watch show. I have yet to get into Season 3 (I NEED MORE TIME IN MY DAY!) but I’m going to start soon. I promise.

Normally, this list is for shows I recommend. I can’t extend my recommendation to AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. The zombie drama has been a bad joke since Season 4 when new showrunners took over. It’s remarkable that a series with this many good actors could be this bad, but here we are. It’s the worst show on TV (that I watch) and as far as I’m concerned, the only reasons to watch are A) to finish what we started and B) to hate-watch and have a good laugh. Here’s my review of Season 8, Episode 2.

I still haven’t gotten around to watching Citadel on Amazon Prime, mainly because everyone tells me it’s so bad. But I will soon because I really do enjoy spy thrillers and sometimes even dumb spy thrillers can be fun. The show is airing weekly every Sunday on Amazon Prime.

I have no excuses at this point for not having watched Apple’s Silo, but I’m planning on a good binge soon. Wait, scratch that: I do have good excuses. I’m juggling so many other shows right now it’s hard to keep up! But I’ve heard really great things about this one so I’m diving in soon and will report back with a review ASAP! The premise sure sounds interesting: It’s part dystopian sci-fi story about a society driven underground, living in a massive silo, and part crime/detective drama. Right up my alley, no doubt.

I’ve watched one episode of HBO’s new political comedy limited-series, White House Plumbers and honestly thought it was great. The story of the men behind the Nixon Watergate scandal is already a fascinating one, but in the hands of Justin Theroux and Woody Harrelson—both of whom ham the hell out of their roles—it’s also genuinely funny. You can read my review of the series premiere right here.

I’m keeping this one on my list despite not having watched it yet because I’m hearing great things and I’m reminding myself—by way of this list!—what to watch. Note to self: Watch and write about Mrs. Davis, Erik!

The premise is basically this: Elizabeth Abbot (Betty Gilpin, GLOW) has her life ruined when she’s ousted from her convent (she’s a nun) and goes out on a mission of vengeance to destroy a powerful AI called Mrs. Davis. Secret societies, religious conspiracies and more follow. That sounds great, honestly. My only excuse for not starting this one yet is that there are so many shows out right now and god only gave us 24 hours in a day.

Succession

There are just two episodes left of Succession’s fourth and final season. I’ve already seen the penultimate episode which airs this coming Sunday and I can’t wait to talk about it with all of you. Even thinking about writing a review of this second-to-last episode is daunting. Succession is just a tremendously well-written and superbly acted drama that can be funny, shocking, emotionally poignant, unsettling and mirrors our own world in a way that’s always thought-provoking and profound. I’ll be sad when it ends.

From is a ‘Lost-like’ and a really scary, tense, mysterious show about a strange town in the middle of nowhere that basically mirrors the Hotel California: You can check in anytime you like but you can never leave. But also with monsters and mystery and all kinds of trippy stuff. It’s really great and nobody’s heard of it, though I’m doing my best to change that! The first season is on Amazon Prime Video but Season 2 is only on MGM+.

Man, Barry has gotten so weird this season I’m not sure how to feel about it, or whether it’s even real. I actually finally wrote about the show in detail and made a video if you’d like to dig deeper into the time-jump and the surreal nature of everything going on currently. Not my favorite season of Bill Hader’s dark comedy, but still great TV.

Yellowjackets has been of a mixed bag in Season 2 but I’ve really enjoyed the last couple episodes. Episode 8 (my review) was honestly very powerful, especially in the past timeline. This is, like From, another “Lost-like” and the first season remains one of my favorite seasons of television in the past decade.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is a new show from Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky that just aired this Thursday on Adult Swim (and HBO Max after). The first episode is free to watch right now.

Okay, some bonus entries for this weekend’s list:
