At least 10 people were killed and damage was reported across seven villages after a volcano erupted in the eastern Indonesian island of Flores moments before midnight on Sunday—the second major volcanic in two weeks in the country which is located in the seismologically active region known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire.”

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki’s 24-minute long eruption started at 11.57 p.m. local time on Sunday, as it spewed a column of hot ash as high as 2,000 meters (6562 feet) into the air from the mountain’s peak, Indonesia’s Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said.
The agency raised its volcano alert to its highest level 4, as the column of hot ash landed on buildings and homes across seven villages—including a convent of Catholic nuns, the Associated Press reported.
In an update on Monday morning, Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (BNPB) said more than 10,000 people have been affected by the eruption, although it is unclear how many have been moved to evacuation sites.
A spokesperson for the agency told AP that all 10 dead bodies—including a child—were recovered from a 2.5-mile radius near the volcanic crater and authorities were still searching for more bodies buried under collapsed homes.
The agency said it has created a safety zone within a radius of 7 km from the eruption center—barring the entry of people—as it warned of potential rain-induced lava floods in the rivers originating from the mountain’s peak.
