The airman, whose identity has not been revealed, was transported to a nearby hospital with “critical life-threatening injuries,” the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said on X.
An Air Force spokesperson confirmed with various news outlets that the person involved in the incident is an “active duty airman,” without providing additional details.
The airman live-streamed the self-immolation on Twitch, and in the video he said he was “an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force and I will no longer be complicit in genocide.”
After setting himself on fire, the man repeatedly shouted “Free Palestine.”
