Even after decades in the music industry, U2 continues to assert their chart dominance with their latest hit single, "Atomic City." The band's newest achievement comes as the tune arrives on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart—a ranking the group knows very well by now.

“Atomic City” marks U2’s fifty-first hit on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. The weekly tally ranks the top-performing tunes across radio stations in the U.S. that focus on a style of rock known loosely as “mainstream rock,” which is exactly what it sounds like.

This new hit further extends U2's record as the act with the most appearances on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in its years-long history, according to Billboard. Tom Petty, both as a solo artist and with the Heartbreakers, is the closest contender with 48 chart appearances. Van Halen follows closely behind with 47 hits.

U2's remarkable run on Mainstream Rock Airplay chart includes an impressive 21 top 10 hits. That figure also features seven No. 1 singles. The band last ruled with "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me,” way back in August 1995. They most recently entered the top 10 with "Vertigo" in November 2004.

Despite their extensive chart history, U2 had not made an appearance on Mainstream Rock Airplay before this week since their single "Invisible" debuted and peaked at No. 27 in early 2014. It’s impressive that even after almost a 10-year gap away from the tally, they still manage to claim the most appearances ever.

"Atomic City" stands as a one-off single from U2, as it doesn’t appear to be tied to any full-length project. Instead, it was likely released to continue to promote their new Las Vegas residency, which is taking place now at the brand new Sphere venue.
