The federal judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s election interference case suggested Monday his trial could be underway in August, Politico reported, as the election-year case remains delayed while an appeals court decides if Trump can claim “presidential immunity.”

Trump’s trial was scheduled to begin on March 4, but District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan officially canceled the trial date indefinitely on Friday as the former president appeals his presidential immunity claim at the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has not ruled on the matter.

At a status conference for an unrelated case in Washington, D.C., on Monday, Chutkan said she was “not hoping to be in the country on August 5,” unless she was in trial for another case that has not yet been rescheduled, likely referring to Trump’s trial, Politico reported.

If Trump’s trial is delayed that long, it could drag on after the Republican National Convention from July 15 to 18—where Trump could easily become the party’s nominee after easily winning the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary in January.
