Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to postpone sentencing in former President Donald Trump’s hush money case due to the Supreme Court’s momentous presidential immunity ruling Monday, a setback just weeks after Trump became the first former president to be criminally convicted, probably delaying any sentence until after the Republican National Convention.

Prosecutors said in a letter to New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan they will not oppose Trump’s request to delay a previously scheduled July 11 sentencing date, an argument Trump’s legal team made in order to make a case on how the Supreme Court’s ruling granting wide immunity to former presidents for “official” acts will affect the New York case.

Merchan must now rule on whether or not to adjourn the sentencing.

The sentencing was originally scheduled just days before the start of the Republican National Convention, a key date for Trump’s campaign to return to the White House.

Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments in late May, following a weeks-long trial marked by salacious testimony of Trump’s alleged affair with Daniels and an alleged “catch and kill” scheme to bury unflattering stories about Trump ahead of the 2016 election.
