The meeting comes after Trump predicted last week his indictment was imminent, based on a letter he said he received from Smith’s office indicating he is a “target” in its January 6 probe.
Meanwhile, the grand jury weighing the Justice Department’s evidence against Trump in the case was also expected to meet Thursday, though it’s unclear when they will formally vote on an indictment.
Trump’s legal team was prepping for a possible indictment as soon as Thursday, sources told NBC News.
While it’s unclear what charges Trump could face, the New York Times reported the letter indicated they could stem from a Civil War-era law that makes it a crime to intimidate or threaten anyone from exercising their constitutional rights.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
