Former President Donald Trump slammed President Joe Biden on Friday as “grossly incompetent” in his first remarks since the first 2024 debate, and despite growing worries from Democrats over Biden’s rocky performance, Trump speculated Biden will stay in the race, arguing he’s still polling above other Democrats.

Speaking at a rally in Chesapeake, Virginia, Trump claimed he “had a big victory against a man looking to destroy our country,” arguing Biden squandered his time preparing for the debate, and saying Biden “studied so hard he didn’t know what the hell he was doing.”

Trump—who at 78 is three years younger than Biden—claimed Biden’s “problem is not his age” but his lack of “competence,” arguing he knows people older than Biden who “are doing wonderful things.”

Trump, who has repeatedly mocked Biden for verbal gaffes and a series of stumbles on the campaign trail, doubled down on that mockery on Friday, but still said he believes Biden will stay in the race.

Speaking of rumored Democrats who could replace Biden as the Democratic nominee at the Democratic National Convention, Trump said Biden “does better in polls than any of the Democrats they’re talking about.”

Specifically, Trump bashed California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, arguing he “can’t run California,” and slamming Vice President Kamala Harris, a frequent target of Trump’s ridicule (Biden polled well above longshot Democratic candidate Rep. Dean Phillips, Minn., in early 2024 primary polling, as well as a slew of Democrats who never launched challenges).

Trump and Biden’s rallies came less than 24 hours after CNN’s 90-minute presidential debate, the first of two scheduled debates ahead of the November election. Biden spoke in a hoarse and whispery voice, repeatedly appeared to stumble over his words and lost his train of thought on several occasions, raising eyebrows from pundits over his advanced age and mental acuity—already a concern for many voters.
