President-elect Donald Trump’s criminal sentencing is postponed indefinitely—potentially until after he leaves office—Judge Juan Merchan ruled Friday, as the criminal cases against Trump have fallen apart in the wake of him winning the presidential election.

Merchan paused Trump’s sentencing, which was scheduled for Nov. 26, while Trump tries to dismiss the guilty verdict against him on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

Prosecutors said they will oppose Trump’s effort to dismiss the case, but agreed that his sentencing could be postponed while the issue is litigated.

It’s unclear when Trump’s sentencing could take place now: Merchan asked for filings on the dispute over dismissing the case to be filed by Dec. 9, but did not give a timeline for when he could potentially rule on throwing out the verdict.

Even if he does rule before Trump takes office not to dismiss the charges, that doesn’t mean Trump will be sentenced before Inauguration Day: Prosecutors proposed in their filing that one way to deal with Trump being found guilty but also serving as president would be to postpone the sentencing until after Trump leaves office.
