President Donald Trump provided clarity Thursday on when his most-sweeping tariffs, including reciprocal levies impacting imported goods globally, will go into effect, the latest confusion as timelines shift surrounding Trump’s signature trade policy.
President Donald Trump signs an executive order in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports will go into effect Tuesday, March 4, the president posted to his Truth Social platform Thursday morning.
An additional 10% levy on Chinese goods will also go into effect that date, according to Trump.
Trump said Wednesday the Mexican and Canadian tariffs wouldn’t begin until April 2, and the duty on imports from the U.S.’ neighbors had previously been delayed by a month from Trump’s executive orders signed Feb. 1.
But Trump wrote Thursday the “April Second Reciprocal Tariff date will remain in full force and effect,” seemingly indicating that his reciprocal tariffs will go into effect that date, a day after a study among his administration on the levies is scheduled to conclude.
