Former President Donald Trump claims he received a letter Sunday from Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith notifying him that he is a “target” in the agency’s investigation of the January 6 Capitol riots, indicating he could soon face his third round of charges since leaving office.

Trump said in a Tuesday post on his Truth Social app Smith gave him four days to appear before a grand jury weighing the Justice Department’s evidence against him and considering whether to bring charges.

Trump predicted Smith’s request for him to appear before the grand jury “almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” he wrote in the statement, calling the letter “HORRIFYING NEWS.”

Federal prosecutors have not indicated whether they plan on charging Trump in the January 6 probe or publicly confirmed the target letter, though ABC News reported the letter was sent, and it remains unclear what charges Trump could face.

Trump repeated his narrative that the probe was a partisan effort to aid President Joe Biden’s re-election changes and said that with the letter, the Justice Department has “effectively issued a third indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden’s NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, who is largely dominating him in the race for the Presidency.”
