Former President Donald Trump on Thursday appealed a civil court verdict finding him liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll, a writer who alleged Trump raped her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s.

Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, filed the appeal with the federal court in Manhattan late Thursday after vowing to appeal the verdict earlier in the week.

The jury unanimously found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation on Tuesday, ordering him to pay Carroll $5 million in damages.

Shortly after the verdict, Tacopina said the trial had been unfair, the New York Times reported, claiming U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan was biased in favor of Carroll and allowed her lawyers to enter evidence he felt shouldn’t have been included, such as the infamous Access Hollywood tape in which Trump says famous people can can “grab” women.

Tacopina had previously attempted to get a mistrial in the case, saying Kaplan was preventing him from appropriately questioning Carroll during his cross-examination and allowing inappropriate evidence.

Trump—who did not testify during the trial or appear in-person—himself responded to the verdict in an all-caps Truth Social post Tuesday, calling it “a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time” and insisting he doesn’t know Carroll.
