Reed "was not engaged in any activities on behalf of the U.S. Government,” State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters Tuesday.
Patel added that Reed is now receiving medical care in Germany after being transported to the country by a non-governmental organization—one which Patel did not name.
Patel has not shared the extent of Reed’s injuries.
