A 2-year-old was killed in Livonia, Michigan after a tornado caused a tree to fall on the house he and his family were sleeping inside, local authorities said.

The toddler’s mother was taken to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition, while her 2-month-old child, who was also sleeping in the house, was unharmed.

The National Weather Service said Livonia was hit by an EF-1 tornado with peak wind speeds of 95 miles per hour and moved through a path spanning 5.5 miles.

Severe storms and tornadoes also struck parts of Maryland and the D.C. area late on Wednesday, causing some structural damage and downing power lines.

While no severe injuries have been reported so far, authorities had to rescue at least five people who were trapped indoors after a tree collapsed on their house.

People trapped inside two other houses damaged by fallen trees also managed to escape without injuries.
