A top Hamas official was killed in an explosion outside Lebanon’s capital of Beirut that killed six people on Tuesday, multiple outlets reported, citing Lebanon’s state National News Agency, as fighting escalates between Israel and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, a key ally of Gaza-based Hamas.
Smoke rises after an explosion in the Dahieh region of Beirut.
The explosion killed Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri, Lebanon’s al-Manar TV station—a news agency controlled by Hezbollah—reported, while state media also confirmed.
The state National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone hit a Hamas office in suburbs south of the city, according to Reuters.
Two people familiar with the matter also told Reuters a “senior Palestinian militant” may have died in the explosion, with sources saying the explosion could have been the result of a drone strike.
