Welcome back, dearest Wordlers! Once again, I sort of spaced that yesterday was Wednesday, though this time I have an excuse: I was camping for my daughter’s 16th birthday!

In any case, Wednesdays are Wordle Wednesday around these parts, and I forgot. We usually do a riddle but I left that out of yesterday’s post, so we’ll do the riddle today. I’m super exhausted from camping, by the way, so bear with me!

Today’s Riddle:

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.

It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills.

It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.

I’ll post the answer tomorrow!

Okay, let’s do this Wordle!

The Hint: The smallest unit of bread.

The Clue: This word has way more consonants than vowels.

I was thinking about camping for obvious reasons and though we didn’t see any bears, it’s always a possibility when out in nature. I’ve seen them before. Magnificent, terrifying creatures. And a good guess today, leaving me with just 7 words.

I wanted to narrow down my vowels, so I guessed point next, which added five grey boxes—huzzah!—leaving me still with only two. But at this point I could only think of two words to choose from, and I went with my gut: crumb just seemed more likely than rugby, and it was!

Today’s Score: I tied with the Bot, which means zero for tying and +1 for guessing in three for a grand total of 1 point. Huzzah!

The word "crumb" has its origins in Old English. It can be traced back to the Old English word "cruma," which meant a small fragment or piece. The word "cruma" is believed to have Germanic roots, ultimately deriving from the Proto-Germanic word "krumô."

In Old English, the word "cruma" referred to a small piece of bread or cake, often leftover or broken off from a larger loaf. Over time, the term "crumb" expanded in its usage to refer to any small particle or fragment of food, as well as non-food items like dust or debris.

The word "crumb" has remained relatively unchanged in its spelling and pronunciation throughout the centuries, maintaining its essential meaning of a small, broken-off piece or fragment.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
