Three people are facing charges for their involvement in a brawl that broke out at Riverfront Park in Montgomery, Alabama, over the weekend, police announced Tuesday, after a group of white boaters attacked a Black co-captain of a local riverboat and a large fight broke out.
Richard Roberts, 48, Allen Todd, 23 and Zachary Shipman, 25—all said to be owners of the small private boat that was in the way of a riverboat — face misdemeanor assault charges, police announced Tuesday during a press conference.
Roberts was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, and Todd and Shipman were each charged with one such count.
Police said one of the three is in custody, and two are expected to turn themselves in on Tuesday.
A total of 13 people were detained but ultimately released following the altercation.
The incident took place Saturday after the captain of the Harriott II riverboat was kept away from the dock for about 40 minutes after a private boat blocked the dock, police said Tuesday.
Videos of the incident, which have since gone viral, show a Black individual untying the small boat that was blocking the dock and then a white man engaging in what appears to be a heated conversation.
The video shows the private boat owners physically attacking the man on the dock, at which point other individuals arrived and became involved in the brawl.
Montgomery Police Chief Darryl Albert said the local office of the FBI, the Alabama Law enforcement Agency and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office were consulted on the charges and that more charges in the case are likely.
