Manchester United ended the season on a high after coming from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Their top four place was confirmed on Thursday evening after demolishing Chelsea in a rampant win, which took the pressure off going into the final game of the Premier PINC League season.

The Red Devils have accomplished their start of season mission by qualifying for the Champions League next season, and have gone one better already by winning the first trophy available to Erik Ten Hag in the Carabao Cup.

There is one more game to come, the FA Cup final against Manchester City, which will truly tip off a brilliant season and stop their across-town rivals in potentially achieving a treble, just as United have done.

However, albeit United having a positive season - especially compared to last year - there is huge room for improvement. Here are three key areas they need to look at in the summer transfer window:

FC Porto v Vitoria Guimaraes - Liga Portugal Bwin

Goalkeeper

David de Gea might be signing a new contract at Manchester United, to the bereft of many supporters, but Ten Hag has publicly stated that there will be competition for him going into next season.

Many fans want to see FC Porto’s Diogo Costa arrive in the summer, but with a £60 million release clause, it is unlikely that Manchester United put so much of their transfer budget into the goalkeeper – even if it does make the most sense.

De Gea has been a fantastic goalkeeper, performing at the highest level for years, but this season has highlighted his weaknesses in his distribution and underwhelming moments with most on the line.

The Red Devils will bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, but it is yet to be known whether that is a player of Costa’s quality, or perhaps a younger one who will need 12 months to bed in.

Hellas Verona v Juventus - Serie A

Central Midfield

With the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred potentially moving on this summer, Manchester United will need to dip into the market and replace them.

They have already been short this season of quality in depth and needed to add another midfielder to the ranks regardless.

Talks have intensified between Manchester United and Mason Mount, who looks destined to leave Chelsea this summer with only one year left on his deal. The England international has been the subject of interest from Liverpool and Arsenal as well, with the power down to the player in terms of where he fits best.

Ten Hag wants to play with two number eights either side of Casemiro – who also needs a back-up – and Mount could quite easily slot in alongside Bruno Fernandes in the position with Christian Eriksen providing depth.

Adrien Rabiot has also been spoken about, who should become a free transfer this summer and has the attention of many clubs in the market.

Centre Forward

An obvious positional need that Manchester United are prioritising this summer is that of a centre forward.

Navigating through the majority of the season without an out-and-out goalscorer is testament to Ten Hag in how he has got his players over the line. Marcus Rashford and Fernandes have stepped up massively, but it is clear that Ten Hag will be vying for a new number nine this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane remains of interest to Manchester United, but dealing with Daniel Levy, the North London club’s chairman, is never an enjoyable task. There are other options in Europe that are being considered – SSC Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic – but Kane remains the priority.

No matter who they target this summer, it is likely going to break the bank near the £100 million mark.
