Today, the Television Critics Association (TCA) announced the shows and movies nominated for the 2023 TCA Awards.

Succession, from HBO | Max, which concluded its run recently, tied with the FX’s The Bear and freshman drama The Last of Us, also from HBO | Max, with the most nominations at five each.

HBO | Max leads all nominees for the second consecutive year, with 20 nominations to its credit. FX places second with 10, followed by Disney+ and Peacock with nine each.

The TCA presents awards in 14 distinct categories, featuring the newly-announced additions of Outstanding Achievement In Children’s Programming, which recognizes shows catering to children seven years old and under; and Outstanding Achievement In Family Programming, which recognizes shows created for youths from seven years old and up.

Additional categories put the spotlight on outstanding achievements in Drama; Comedy; Miniseries; News and Information; Reality; and Variety, Sketch or Talk Shows, among others.

The TCA represents more than 200 professional journalists who cover television for publications across the United States and Canada. The members reach tens of millions of consumers each week, and are considered experts within the industry, representing their employers as moderators, panelists, radio/TV guests and more. The prestigious organization honors outstanding achievements in television and enduring contributions to the medium’s heritage through the TCA Awards each year.

In the Program Of The Year category, 2022 winner Abbott Elementary looks to take the trophy again, but faces stiff competition from AMC’s legal series Better Call Saul, the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff Andor, Peacock’s new crime caper Poker Face, and HBO | Max’s anthology drama The White Lotus' and sibling rivalry series The Other Two, in addition to the aforementioned Succession, The Bear, and The Last of Us.

Vying for kudos in the Individual Achievement In Comedy are Barry’s Bill Hader, The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White, Natasha Lyonne from Poker Face, along with Quinta Brunson and Janelle Jones from Abbott Elementary, Jury Duty’s James Marsden, and Harrison Ford, who stars in Shrinking.

Three actors from Succession are nominated in the Individual Achievement In Drama category ‑ Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Jeremy Strong. The trio are joined by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us, Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn, Betty Gilpin from Mrs. Davis, Swarm’s Dominique Fishback, and Christine Baranski, who is the lead in The Good Fight.

In other categories, surreal hits The Rehearsal and Jury Duty try to out-awkward each other for Outstanding Achievement In Reality alongside new series The Traitors and returning show Top Chef.

Musical-themed shows Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and Daisy Jones & The Six compete against each other in the Outstanding Achievement In Movies, Miniseries Or Specials category, while three-time category winner Last Week Tonight With John Oliver tries to reclaim its crown from reigning champ I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.

“The 2023 nominees for the TCA Awards boast an eclectic lineup from across the entertainment spectrum,” said Melanie McFarland, TCA President and TV Critic for Salon.com. “This season truly had something for everyone—from innovative comedies and gripping dramas, to immersive documentaries and refreshingly cerebral storytelling set in a galaxy far, far away. I am eager to see which stars and series our members have chosen to honor when the winners are revealed.”

Below is the list of 2023 Television Critics Association nominees, excluding the Career Achievement and Heritage Award winners, which will be announced later this summer.

Past TCA Award winners are listed on the organization’s official website, tvcritics.org/tca-awards.

Winners of the 39TH Annual TCA Awards will be announced on August 7th.
