Kpop Demon Hunters

Netflix

This article was published on 6/23 and republished on 6/25.

Netflix original movies are extremely hit or miss as the service continues its apparent attempt to make movie theaters obsolete, but now? There’s a new movie it’s just released that has set an overall Rotten Tomatoes record.

The movie is KPop Demon Hunters, which appears to have the highest combined critic and audience score for a Netflix original production, a record for the service.

Whatever good Netflix original movie you might hit this mark, it will likely fall short. Here are some of Netflix’s most high-profile films, and you’ll see that they’re either way off or they miss by a few points.

It’s possible these numbers don’t hold for KPop Demon Hunters, but for now, here we are. It seems like a random movie to do this well, I suppose, but there are a whole lot of KPop fans out there, a whole lot of animation fans out there, and I suppose a whole lot of demon hunter fans. Here’s the synopsis of the film:

MORE FOR YOU

“When they aren't selling out stadiums, Kpop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat. Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet -- an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.”

The film is directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, both industry figures who have largely worked in art departments rather than directing projects. The film stars the likes of Arden Cho, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo. Cho may be the most well-known with lengthy roles in shows like Chicago Med and Teen Wolf.

KPop Demon Hunters debuted at #1 in Netflix’s top 10 list, but it has been unseated rather quickly by The Intern, the 2015 Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway movie that stands the test of time and has a wide-ranging appeal to the broader Netflix audience.

We’ll see how the scores hold up long term, but for now, KPop Demon Hunters is on top against Oscar-winners and action blockbusters.

Update (6/25): A few updates here, and one that unfortunately has killed the record that was set a few days back. More audience reviews have come in and dropped the movie to an 85% score. That means we are down to a 177, sliding the movie further down the list, now in fifth place. It’s not wholly unexpected, it’s tough to maintain ultra-high audience scores and hundreds or thousands of viewers tune in, but oh well, it’s still an excellent film!

One point of good news is that the film has returned to #1 in Netflix’s top 10 list, reclaiming that spot from The Intern, which I figured would stay there longer. I think word is spreading about KPop here.

Additionally, director Maggie Kang has addressed the possibility of a sequel, which seems like it could become a reality. Here’s what she told Screenrant:

“Always. There are always side stories, and there are things we’ve thought of while making this one,” she said. “There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore.”

Sounds like a plan, we’ll see if Netflix agrees and we may have word on that soon, especially if this great performance continues.
